This course explores the significant movements and trends in contemporary theatre, around the themes of: politics, identities, translation, bodies and disability, gender and sexualities, communities, spaces, environment and technology. These themes are intended to reflect those commonly seen in contemporary theatre today. Through close engagement with and analysis of a range of contemporary UK/global theatre in live performance, as well as relevant critical literature and media sources, students will critically reflect on contemporary issues in the performing arts. Sessions also include examination of a series of case studies exploring performances, artists, companies or venues and their contribution to theatre today. The course also includes tours of a major London theatre; meeting and engaging with practitioners and scholars and participating in practical sessions.
